USD/JPY is one of the most popular couples in the financial market. And JPY is one of the strongest currencies of the world. Plus, JPY is a safe haven – whenever the markets are losing, yen is gaining. All of these three factors are making the couple made of US dollar and Japanese yen very interesting and while USD we know, yen itself is pretty much unknown to us.
What are the most fascinating facts of JPY?
1. Say my name.
2. History.
3. Coins.
4. Banknotes.
5. Security.
6. Flowers.
7. The higher, the more.
8. Safety.

1. Say my name.
The name yen translates from Japanese’s as circle or round object.
2. History.
Yen was introduced as a substitute for Tokugawa era money which were based on the mon – a copper coin. This was back in 1871. Yen was declared Japanese national currency with ‘New Currency Act’. The change was necessary in order to bring financial stability to the country.
3. Coins.
One can find coins of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen in the circulation. Interesting, but 1-yen coin weighs exactly 1 gram. Is that a coincidence? Well, knowing the love of the Japanese to symbols and accuracy I would vote no – not a coincidence. Although those who are reckless with coins have all the possibility in the world to easily lose it due to шt being very light.
4. Banknotes.
1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen notes can be found in circulation since 2004.
5. Security.
Yen is one of the most difficult currencies for counterfeiting. The banknotes have several stages of protections against counterfeiting including watermarks, holograms and intaglio ink, which raises the print of the bills to the touch. To counterfeit a Japanese banknote is very hard. To do it properly is even harder.
6. Flowers.
5.000 yen is a very interesting banknote. On the reverse side of it one can found a famous painting by Ōgata Kōrin called “The Kakitsubata Flowers”. Although the banknote itself is very popular it seems that not a lot of people know this little fact as no one really bothers to look at the banknotes. And sometimes it can be pretty rewarding.
7. The higher, the more.
It is standard – in the whole world money is counted in thousands. But even here Japan had to differentiate from the rest of us. The Japanese count in multiples of 10.000. How that works – I do not know. The fact is – it works for the Japanese themselves.
8. Safety.
Yen is famously one of the safe havens of the markets. The lower the rest of the currencies are going, the higher the yen rises. We have already discussed safe haven status of yen here. Refresh your memory on the topic!
