The 2 tech giants are partnering together in order to build a huge Internet undersea cable from Los Angeles to Hong-Kong.
Google Cloud Platform unit announced about the new partnership in a blog post. The post mention that the name of the new project is “ The Pacific Light Cable network” and it “will have 12,800 KM, of fiber and estimated cable capacity of 120 Tbps”.
It’s not the first time those companies involved in such ambitious project. The internet giants handle an enormous amount of data every day, from texts, videos and photos to entire files and documents stored in their servers. Rather than rely on telecom firms to provide the infrastructure to carry that information around the world, the tech company start to increasingly doing it by themselves. Facebook is already working with Microsoft to build a giant cable under the Atlantic Ocean, and for Google the new project with Facebook is the sixth submarine cable which Google’s taken a stake.
But this time, according to Google, it’s going to have more bandwidth than any other linking cable between Americans and Asia – it will have enough capacity to handle 80 million HD video conference calls between the continents at the same time.
Another partners in this project is Hong-Kong based company named Pacific Light Data Communication, and TE SubCom, a company that specializes in undersea communications technology and provide the gear for the cable system. Till now the companies didn’t provide any financial details on the project yet, and Facebook and google both didn’t immediately respond to requests for further comment. The only comment came from the Hong-Kong’s side, where Wei Junkang, the chairman of Pacific Light said: “It is gratifying that global technology companies like Google and Facebook have become co-investors”.
The 2 are companies blocked in mainland China, so they plowing money into this ultrafast link between the west coast of the US through the Pacific Ocean and to Hong Kong, where their services can be viewed due to the face that Hong-Kong is a special Chinese territory. The companies plan to use Hong-Kong as their key network hub for Assis, and especially to China.
The tech giants working full time on the last year to bring the internet to remote locations. Facebook, Google and Microsoft too work and invest on subsea and land fiber connections, as well as more experimental tools such a giant balloons and laser-equipped drones.
